Long-Running Tasks
Every message you send to the assistant starts a task that runs on the server, not in your browser. You can close the panel, reload the page, shut the laptop or pick the conversation up on another device, and the task carries on. When you come back, you reattach to it live.
What durable means for you
Closing the tab does not cancel the task. It keeps running on the server.
Reloading reattaches. Open the conversation again and the assistant's answer keeps streaming where it left off, including tool activity.
Any device works. Monofile stores the conversation on the server, so the same task streams into any device where you open it.
Interruptions are visible. Monofile records work step by step, so everything a task finished before an interruption stays saved and reviewable. A task that goes quiet for 15 minutes is marked as interrupted; send the message again to carry on from there.
Watching what is running
| Signal | Where |
|---|---|
| A count badge on the launcher | Bottom right, when one or more tasks are running. It caps the display at 9+, and the tooltip reads "N running tasks" |
| A spinner in the history list | The chat history popover, next to any conversation with a live task |
| A shimmering status line | The composer, naming the tool the assistant is using right now |
| Live spend for this task | The credits button in the composer footer, which shows spend against the task's reserved budget |
| A desktop notification | Optional. Toggle the bell in the panel header and it notifies you when a task finishes while the panel is closed or the tab is hidden |
To reattach by hand, open the chat history popover and pick the conversation. One conversation runs one task at a time. If you send a message to a conversation that already has a task running, Monofile tells you and attaches you to the running task.
Stopping a task
The Stop button in the composer ends the task on the server, so it stops in every window that has the conversation open. What a stop does:
Work already finished stays. Files the task already wrote are saved, and they are grouped for review like any other run. See Reviewing Changes.
The conversation records a note saying the task was stopped and why.
Monofile bills the model calls that ran and returns the rest of the reserved budget to your balance.
When a task fails
The conversation shows the error, and the work completed before the failure stays saved and reviewable. Monofile releases the credits held for the task and bills only the model calls that ran. Sending the message again starts a fresh task.
Reattaching to an older task
Monofile keeps the live stream of a task for about 7 days. Within that window, opening the conversation replays it, including a task that finished while you were away. After it expires you still have the full conversation, because Monofile stores the messages themselves permanently. A short notice tells you that the live stream has expired and that you are seeing the saved conversation.
